Euro to peseta converter: what it is and how it works

The peseta was Spain’s currency from 1868 until the euro arrived. On 1 January 1999 an official and irrevocable conversion rate of 166.386 pesetas per euro was set and used to convert all prices, salaries and accounts. Pesetas stopped circulating in early 2002, and since June 2021 they can no longer be exchanged at the Bank of Spain.

Even so, many people still think in pesetas to get a feel for prices. This converter multiplies euros by 166.386 and rounds to the nearest whole peseta, as was done at the time. Note that it does not account for inflation: €100 today does not buy what 16,639 pesetas bought in 2001.

How to use it

  1. Choose euros to pesetas.
  2. Enter the amount in euros.
  3. Read the equivalent in pesetas and in thousands of pesetas.
FormulaPesetas = euros × 166.386

Worked example

€100 is 16,638.6 pesetas, rounded to 16,639 pesetas. A €1.50 coffee would be about 250 pesetas.
