Fraction calculator
Work with two fractions and get the result in its simplest form, as a mixed number and as a decimal.
Fraction calculator: what it is and how it works
A fraction represents part of a whole: the numerator (top) shows how many parts are taken and the denominator (bottom) how many equal parts the whole is divided into. To add or subtract fractions you need a common denominator; to multiply them you multiply numerators and denominators; to divide, you multiply the first by the reciprocal of the second.
The result is simplified by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, so the fraction is in lowest terms. If the numerator is larger than the denominator, the calculator also shows the mixed number (whole part plus fraction) and the decimal value.
How to use it
- Enter the numerator and denominator of the first fraction.
- Choose the operation.
- Enter the second fraction and get the simplified result.
a/b + c/d = (a·d + c·b) / (b·d) · a/b × c/d = (a·c) / (b·d) · a/b ÷ c/d = (a·d) / (b·c)Worked example
1/2 + 3/4 = (1·4 + 3·2) / (2·4) = 10/8, which simplifies to 5/4, i.e. 1 1/4 or 1.25.
Frequently asked questions
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. 18/24 divided by 6 gives 3/4.
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator (for example their product or lowest common multiple), adjust the numerators and add them.
What is a mixed number?
An improper fraction written as a whole number plus a proper fraction: 7/3 = 2 1/3.
Can I use negative numbers?
Yes. Put the minus sign in the numerator, for example −3/4.
