Grade average calculator

Work out the average of your grades, taking into account the weight of each exam, assignment or course.

Example: “8 2” is an 8 that counts double. Without a weight it counts once. Weights can be credits or percentages.

Grade average calculator: what it is and how it works

A simple average adds up all the grades and divides by the number of grades: they all count the same. A weighted average gives each grade a different weight, as when a final exam is worth 60 % of the mark or courses carry different numbers of credits.

To calculate it, multiply each grade by its weight, add up the products and divide by the sum of the weights. Just type each grade on its own line followed by its weight (credits, percentage or the number of times it counts). It works with any scale: 0–10, 0–20 or 0–100.

How to use it

  1. Type one grade per line followed by its weight, separated by a space.
  2. If all grades weigh the same, type the grade only.
  3. See the weighted average, the simple average and the range.
FormulaWeighted average = Σ (grade × weight) ÷ Σ weights

Worked example

With an 8 counting double, a 6.5, a 9 and a 7.5 counting triple: (16 + 6.5 + 9 + 22.5) ÷ 7 = 7.71. The simple average would be 7.75.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a credit-weighted average?

Multiply each course grade by its credits, add everything up and divide by the total credits. Type each course as “grade credits”.

Can I use percentages as weights?

Yes. If one exam is worth 40 % and another 60 %, type “7 40” and “8 60”: the result is the same.

What is the difference between simple and weighted averages?

In a simple average every grade counts the same; in a weighted one each counts according to its weight.

What do I need in the final exam?

Try different grades on the exam line until the average reaches the mark you are aiming for.
