Hours and minutes calculator
Add or subtract times in hours and minutes without getting caught out by 60 minutes to the hour.
Hours and minutes calculator: what it is and how it works
Adding up hours is not like adding ordinary numbers, because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. Adding 1:45 and 0:30 as decimals would give 1:75, which is really 2 hours and 15 minutes. This calculator does the conversion for you: type as many durations as you like, one per line, and get the exact total.
It is handy for adding up a week’s working hours, the total length of several tasks or videos, overtime or breaks. As well as hours:minutes, the result is shown in decimal hours (what you need to multiply by an hourly rate) and in total minutes.
How to use it
- Type one duration per line, for example 2:30 or 1h 45m.
- Put a minus sign in front of any duration you want to subtract.
- Read the total in hours and minutes, decimal hours and minutes.
Total (min) = Σ (hours × 60 + minutes) · Decimal hours = total ÷ 60Worked example
2:30 + 1:45 + 0:50 − 0:15 = 4 hours 50 minutes, i.e. 4.83 decimal hours or 290 minutes.
