Hours worked calculator
Work out how many hours you work per day and in total from your start time, finish time and break, including night shifts.
Hours worked calculator: what it is and how it works
Keeping track of hours worked helps you monitor your working time, check overtime or bill a client by the hour. In Spain, employers are also required to keep a daily record of working hours with each employee’s start and finish times.
This calculator subtracts the start time from the finish time and deducts any break that does not count as work, such as a lunch break. If the finish time is earlier than the start time, it assumes the shift ends the next day. It multiplies the result by the days worked and, if you enter an hourly rate, also works out your pay.
How to use it
- Enter your start and finish times.
- Enter the unpaid break in minutes and the number of days worked.
- See hours per day, the total and, with your rate, your pay.
Hours per day = finish − start − break · Total = hours per day × daysWorked example
From 9:00 to 18:00 with an hour for lunch is 8 hours a day; over 5 days, 40 hours. At €12 an hour, that is €480.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a night shift?
Enter the start and finish times as they are (for example 22:00 and 6:00): the calculator detects that the shift ends the next day.
Does the break count as working time?
It depends on your contract or agreement. Unpaid breaks should be deducted; paid breaks should not.
How do I convert hours to decimal for invoicing?
The calculator shows the total in decimal hours: 7:30 is 7.5 hours. Multiply that by your rate.
What is the maximum working week in Spain?
40 hours of actual work a week on an annual average, and normally no more than 9 hours a day unless an agreement provides otherwise.
