Spain unemployment benefit calculator: what it is and how it works

Spain’s contributory unemployment benefit, known as paro, protects people who lose their job involuntarily and have contributed enough. Its duration depends on days contributed in the last six years: 360 to 539 days give 120 days of benefit, and each additional 180 days of contributions adds 60 days, up to a maximum of 720 days with 2,160 or more.

The amount is based on the regulatory base, the average of your contribution bases over the last 180 days: 70 % for the first 180 days and 50 % from day 181. It is subject to a minimum and maximum linked to the IPREM, which in 2026 is €600 a month, and which vary with the number of dependent children.

How to use it

  1. Enter the days contributed in the last six years from your employment history.
  2. Enter your average monthly contribution base over the last 180 days.
  3. Choose your dependent children and see the amount, duration and total.
FormulaBenefit = regulatory base × 70 % (days 1–180) or 50 % (from day 181), with minimum and maximum by children

Worked example

With 1,080 days contributed and an average base of €2,000 a month, entitlement lasts 360 days. 70 % would be €1,400, but the maximum without children is €1,225: you receive €1,225 for six months and €1,000 for the next six, €13,350 in total.

Frequently asked questions

Is unemployment benefit taxed?

Yes. It counts as employment income and SEPE withholds income tax. Your share of Social Security contributions is also deducted.
